Finding a momentarily idle page was

easy. Convincing the baffled boy to sneak

away some food from the kitchen was a bit

more challenging, so thank the heavens for

money. A couple of gold coins later, Hamlin

was once again fleeing the castle grounds for

the haven of the woods, carrying a small sack

packed with food—bread, fruit, roast meat,

and even a small flagon half-filled with wine.

The wine was the reason that Hamlin carried

his food sack gingerly. He desperately

needed the wine.

He retraced his steps to his earlier spot,

stopping abruptly and gaping when he saw

someone pacing back and forth on the path

that led to his tree.

“Oh, for the love of—” Hamlin’s heart

dropped, his spirits sinking, at the sight of

none other than Edouard, looking as though

he were lost in thought, his head bowed, his

arms crossed over his chest.

The other prince didn’t seem to have

heard him. Absorbed in his own concerns, as

usual, Hamlin thought, shaking his head. And

since Edouard stood in the way of Hamlin’s

escape, Hamlin had no choice but to clear his

throat loudly and break the other boy’s

concentration.

“What the—oh.” Edouard blinked, and

he blushed for a moment.

“What on earth are you doing here?”

Hamlin asked, frowning. “Are you going to tell

me that I’m not allowed to sit under the trees

as well?”

“No,” Edouard replied, momentarily

looking abashed and uncertain. He looked

around him as though he were just waking up

from a dream. Then he regarded Hamlin

solemnly. “No, I’m here for you.”

Hamlin sighed. “To tell me to bugger off,

I suppose.”

“To bring you something to eat.”

Silence.

“Huh?”

Edouard beckoned to him and turned

around, plunging deeper into the woods.

Hamlin wondered if a band of hired cutthroats

waited for him. He wouldn’t put it past Queen

Clarimond’s spawn to have his enemy

ambushed and disposed of once and for all.

All the same, he couldn’t help but follow

Edouard deeper into the shadows, the fresh

air and the soft breeze allaying some of his

doubts. His grip on his food sack tightened,

and he wondered if bread, fruit, and roast

meat could be used as defensive weapons.

At length they reached a small open

area—a little circle of grass flooded with

sunlight. And sitting in the center was another

sack similar to what Hamlin carried. Edouard

walked up to it and knelt down to untie it. He

glanced up when Hamlin paused, hesitating

and staring at him dubiously.

“I know what my mother did,” the other

prince said matter-of-factly. “And I disagree

with her. It’s petty, childish, and utterly

illogical, regardless of our mutual enmity.”

Hamlin

blinked,

now

completely

confused. “She’s going to find out about this,

you know,” he said, his resistance wavering.

“You’ll be in big trouble, and I’m sure she’ll

blame me for manipulating you.”

Edouard shrugged, looking nonplussed.

“No one’s perfect.”

“That’s supposed to be comforting?”

“Hamlin, sit down and eat.”

Hamlin cocked an eyebrow. “I beg your

pardon?”

Edouard looked comically baffled at

first, and then realization dawned, his frown

disappearing, and he sighed, indicating the

open sack. “Please sit down, Hamlin, and eat

something. I’m not going to fight with you. It’s

neither the time nor the place, and I’m really

not in the mood for a row.”

“That’s a relief, to be sure,” Hamlin

muttered, rolling his eyes when Edouard

turned away to busy himself with pulling out

food. Hamlin walked over to him and carefully

sat down.
