Hippo Regius, AD 430 (The Vandalic War) – Events in the Western Roman Empire during the early fifth century resulted in a Vandal invasion of North Africa in May 429. Because of an ongoing dispute between Bonifacius, the comes Africae, and the imperial court at Ravenna, the former arranged to receive military support from Vandal King Gaiseric and invited him to settle his peoples in the western provinces of Roman North Africa. The arrival of Vandalic forces was temporarily delayed by the unexpected invasion of Suevians into Baetica in the northern Iberian Peninsula, a situation that threatened the Vandal nation then residing in Spain. By the time Gaiseric and his subjects, together with a minority of Alans, crossed into Mauretania Tingitana, Bonifacius was reconciled with the court in Ravenna, and Romans now sought to stop Vandal migration from spreading to Eastern provinces. Frustrated by the turn of events, the king elected to lead his people from the Mauretanias into Numidia. There, the Vandals defeated a Roman army under Bonifacius and then besieged the governor in the port city of Hippo Regius (Annaba) in the early summer of 430. After several months, the Vandals abandoned the siege due to a shortage of provisions. Sometime later, Eastern Roman general Aspar arrived in Africa with reinforcements from Italy and Constantinople. Encouraged by this influx of fresh troops, Bonifacius decided to resume the war, but Gaiseric defeated both Roman commanders in a single decisive battle. Hippo Regius fell to the Vandals shortly afterwards. The Western Roman government granted all of Numidia and the Mauretanias to the German invaders in 435.
