A legionary (top left), Roman officer (bottom left) and cavalryman (top right) from the altar of Domitius Ahenobarbus, discovered in the Campus Martius in Rome and now in the Louvre, Paris. The altar depicts a military census at the end of the second century BC and though the carving probably dates to 122 BC the Roman soldiers depicted here are supposedly contemporary with the events described. (Adrian Goldsworthy)

The site of ancient Sparta and the remains of the walls of Sparta; view showing the north gate of the acropolis. In their glory days, the Spartans boasted that the strength of their armies made walls redundant. However, by the second century BC the Spartans definitely required the sanctuary of strong walls, and were not too proud to take shelter behind them. (Jackie Whalen)
