‘They were the first rock and roll band I met that were intelligent. There was no guidance at all on those records, and very little need for it. They changed my whole idea of recording. Nobody had the big ego thing about keeping a song a certain way. That changed me. That was the first really free feeling I had in the studio.’

Jack Nitzsche

Between shows at Providence, Rhode Island on 4 November and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 11 November, the Stones returned to Chess Records in Chicago for another session where they recorded a number of tracks, including a reworked ‘Time Is On My Side’. It’s the version that appears on The Rolling Stones No. 2, their second UK album.

The Stones played their last show of this second US tour on 15 November at Chicago’s Arie Crown Theater. At the time it was one of the city’s largest indoor venues with 5,000 seats and every one was filled to help give the band an amazing reception. They had well and truly cracked America at last. As Mick told the Melody Maker in November, ‘I wouldn’t mind going back, provided they keep me away from those stupid questions about hair.’
