Chapter Thirteen

Hawk

I had been blessed not to have many panic attacks in my life. In fact, I could count on one hand the number of times I had stressed out about something. Sure, we all experienced stress from time to time, but I’d been struck with nothing out of control. I was lucky that way.

But, as I stood at the enclosure with the African greys, a sharp pain resonated in the middle of my chest. I stumbled backward and almost fell with the power of it. Bird feed went into the air and tip-tapped onto the ground all around me. The birds cocked their heads to the side, looking offended that I’d treated their sustenance so haphazardly, but my worries were somewhere else.

The panic didn’t belong to me—it belonged to my mate.

Our bond was so strong and yet so new, but his worry was undeniable. I plucked the phone from my back pocket and dialed him immediately but there was no answer. Again, I called but this time while walking to the truck. Whatever was happening, he was taking it to heart.

The ride from the sanctuary to Mason’s place was done with haphazard speed. Once I got there, I parked in the driveway and nearly sprinted to the back house where I found the door open a bit. A thousand bad thoughts rippled through my mind.

“Mason?” I called out. “It’s me.”

“Hey.” He came to the door. “Are you okay? You look kind of…pale.”

I laughed. “I rushed over here because my lion was roaring and clawing me to get to you because he knew you were upset, and you’re asking me if I’m okay?”

Mason’s eyes widened and his grip on the door tightened as he moved to wave me inside. “I am.”

It was the first time we’d seen each other since our night together, and I was wary about whether or not I’d moved too quickly. The guilt still ate at me. He moved to kiss me first, breaking the tension. I leaned into his caresses and held him awhile. He needed it, from the way he held on tightly. “Wanna tell me what’s going on?” I scanned the room, looking for something obvious, but nothing grabbed my attention. Mason kept his place tidy. His bed was made and I could smell eggs, toast, and coffee from his breakfast.

“I got some bad news, and I’m a bit overwhelmed. I…” His mouth opened but nothing came out.

I could feel his fox—antsy and nervous.

“How about a run? There’s some land behind the sanctuary and we can run freely.”

Mason looked over my shoulder. “I don’t know.”

I leaned forward and kissed him, trying to do anything in my power to soothe him. “The sun is about to set. I bet that fox of yours is cute as a button.”

Mason sucked his lips in between his teeth. Gods, he was gorgeous. “He’s not cute. He’s fierce and smart and cunning.”

“He can be all of those things and cute, too. Come on, let my lion see his mate.
