Ugyen Rinzin, Bhutan

a symbol of the fundamental teachings of Buddhism—and of Albert Schwitzer—and its inherent reverence for all life.

“This is why holy people instinctively love animals,” the Holy Pig Farmer confirmed when I called to tell him about my Himalayan adventure. At the Black-Necked Crane Festival in the Phobjikha Valley, Ugyen Rinzin had explained that Bhutan’s fierce dance masks, which look to the western eye to be the snarling faces of great mythic beasts, “actually represent the demons that dwell between the worlds. When people die, their souls must confront these demons, and the dances are designed to familiarize people with these monsters so that they will not become frightened and lose their way.”

Demons? Did he say Demons?

“Of course,” Ugyen confirmed.

It was the first time in my experience that anyone outside of the Christian Gospels themselves had confirmed the existence of demons. The fierce and noble faces of Bhutanese dance masks now guard either side of the door to my work studio, and a small collection of handsome Bhutanese Dharma objects now graces my private altar, and always will.
