Well.

Just…

Yeah.

Jay crossed to his duffel, neck roasting on a blush, and began to change.

He was pissed. He was. Pete had way overstepped, not clearing any of that with him.

But he was also relieved. And kind of impressed. Pete had laid it out there. Not only that, when he asked for questions, he’d put his body between Jay and the other guys, like he was shielding him from whatever they might say. Pete probably didn’t even know he’d done that. It was super romantic, to be honest. Maybe he’d gotten that from his Highlander books.

Also…Pete looked really fucking hot right now, with his brow drawn down in this brooding way and all the muscles in his arms and chest tight as he changed into his flight suit.

And that shouldn’t have mattered—consent was a thing, after all. He shouldn’t be getting hot all over because Pete had manhandled him in front of everyone, but damn it. He kind of wanted to drag Pete into an empty closet and fuck his brains out.

Okay.

Okay. He needed to get his head right so he could work. They could talk about it tonight. They would talk about it tonight. He’d make sure of it. And he’d stand up for himself. If they were in this together, then they needed to make these decisions together. No just barging around like a bull and trampling things. That was fair, right? God, he didn’t know. Being in love with your best friend was hard.

His hand froze halfway to his locker shelf.

Oh, boy.

Oh, man.

Where had that come from? He wasn’t—

He stared at his shampoo. At his deodorant. At a bunch of stuff that had looked normal until five seconds ago. Now it wobbled a little.

Was he? He snuck a cautious glance sideways. Same red hair, same freckles, same big, capable hands. But also now there was that sweet curve of muscle on his neck, and the way he was still turned a little sideways, just enough to put a shoulder between Jay and the room. And then there were his eyes, catching Jay’s and holding them, going soft for a moment, before flicking away shyly.

Well, shit.

He was in love with Pete.

Now he couldn’t remember what he’d been reaching for from the shelf. He let his hand drop and zipped up his flight suit. The rip-stop fabric felt cool on his skin, the seams a bit rough.

Should he tell Pete? He already knew Jay loved him—they were family. (Adopted.)

But this was a whole new level. Another beast altogether. Fooling around was one thing, but waking up—in the middle of your unit’s locker room—and realizing you were head-over-tail wasted for the guy next to you?

He grabbed Pete’s elbow. “Hey—”

But Pete popped a quick kiss on his forehead. It didn’t make a sound. “I need coffee. I’ll get you one.”

And he left.

Jay stared at the empty doorway. Pete never did that. They always walked to the briefing room together.

Was this what it was going to be like? They were together, so now they did things apart?

“Hey, man.
