“What are they doing in there?” the man in the room with Watts asked.

“Just talking,” Watts replied. “I think the old man told his daughter what we want to know. I heard them whispering together.”

“Excellent,” the other man replied, rubbing his hands together. “I knew I was right to bring her here.”

“Do you want to question her?”

“No. You handle it. Make her realize her father’s life is in jeopardy if she doesn’t comply with our demands. If she tells you where to find the amulet, go get it. But I suspect she’s as stubborn as her father and will insist on retrieving it herself. Should that occur, have Benny drive her to her destination, then return here immediately once she gives him the gem.”

“What about Thompson?”

“I have no reason to kill him once I have what I want. You and Benny can disappear, and he can find his own way back to London. I suggest that you both stay out of sight for a while. I’m counting on you. Watts. Don’t disappoint me.”

“Benny won’t be back with the coach till morning.”

“It’s just as well. That will give the daughter time to consider the consequences should she fail to do as she’s told. Bring the amulet to me tomorrow night at the Rusty Fox.”

“What if the woman refuses? The old man won’t tell us a damn thing.”

“She won’t refuse.” He gave Watts a hard look. “The amulet is worthless to you should you decide to keep it. Not a fence in the country will touch it. I wouldn’t be able to get rid of it myself if a private buyer on the Continent wasn’t waiting for it.”

“Don’t worry, you’ll get the bauble. If what you say is true about the government wanting it, it ain’t worth the trouble.”

“Just remember that. Until tomorrow night, Watts.”
