WHEN THE RIDE started, Johnny put his arm around Jillian, pulling her closer and gazing into her eyes with the mischievous smile she adored. “Ever kissed a guy on a Ferris wheel?”

“Maybe,” she said coyly.

“Seriously? I thought you were too busy with fashion to be into boys when you were younger.”

“I was, but I didn’t live in a bubble. I just had to hide my secret flirtations from my brothers. I went to a fair with my friends when I was thirteen, and Ronnie Templeton was there. He was in the same grade as me, and all the girls liked him. He had shaggy brown hair and the cutest dimples. He asked me to ride with him, and when he kissed me, his braces cut my lip. I had to lie to my parents when I got home and tell them I tripped.”

“And what happened with Ronnie?”

“I told him I was swearing off boys with braces and that maybe I’d go out with him when he got his braces off.”

“And did you?”

She shook her head. “He had a girlfriend by then, and I was onto bigger, better things. Have you ever kissed a girl on a Ferris wheel?”

“No, but I’d like to. Want to be my first?”

A little giddy at the prospect, she thought, No, I want to be your first and your last. But that wasn’t reality, so she’d take what she could get. “What about Zoey?”

“She can’t see us if we kiss while we’re on the way up. We’ll be below her.”

“You’ve really thought this out.”

“I’ve had days to think about all the places I could steal kisses.”

The way he said it, low and hungrily, made her want it even more. She waited with bated breath as he pulled her tighter against him, taking her hand in his other hand as their car made it to the top. The ride down seemed to take forever. The minute they were behind Zoey, his big hands cradled her face, but he didn’t rush to kiss her. His thumb brushed over her lips, and he said, “I want to remember this moment.”

Her heart skipped as his gaze moved over her face for a second before his warm lips touched hers. He kissed her slow and deep, like they had all the time in the world, and when he threaded his fingers into her hair, angling her mouth beneath his, taking the kiss deeper, that world fell away, and all she felt was their kiss and his hands and the heat of his body against her. She felt like she was floating on a cloud, and she never wanted to get off.

When he drew back, the sounds of the ride creaking and Zoey yelling, “Woo-hoo!” jerked her back to reality. But she didn’t move, could barely breathe for the way Johnny was looking at her like she was something precious, something to be treasured.

“Best first kiss ever,” he said, and he took out his phone, putting his arm around her again and
