Chapter Nine
Standing up, Sandy followed Alice around the Bronco. Brad strolled up, throwing a glance at the Maverick Derringer in his partnerâs hand.
âFiguring on doing some shooting, boss-lady?â the big blond inquired.
âMaybe,â Alice answered, but did not return the pistol to her pocket. âWhat happened up there?â
âTheyâve gone. Lit out running like a Nueces steer and I donât reckon theyâll be back.â
âIs that one dead?â Sandy asked, indicating the body on the slope.
âYes,â Brad replied. âCome on. Weâll tell the police at Chihuahua whatâs happened and theyâll pick him up.â
âWhat will they say when they hear youâve killed two men?â Sandy asked, sensing from his tone that he did not relish having to deliver the news.
âI donât know,â Brad admitted. âEstradre, the last chief of police, wouldâve said good riddance. They werenât just a couple of two-bit punks I shot, but real, genuine professionals.â
Although the last words had been directed mainly to his partner, Brad found to his surprise that they did not bring about the expected interest. Realizing that she had been addressed, Alice jerked her gaze from Sandyâs right boot.
âWhat was that, Brad?â
âI said those yahoos in the Peugeot werenât just small-town punks Ohris had picked up to help him. No punk would own a rifle like this, or take care of it so good. And youâre sure selling Gene short if you think there was a sniperâs rifle, Thompson and riot gun lying around Nonoava without him knowing they were there.â
âI suppose so,â Alice answered absently.
âThen youâre sure that Estradre will accept your storyâ, Brad?â Sandy put in.
âHe would have,â the big blond drawled. âTrouble being, heâs not chief any more. He was replaced by Villanueva after the riots. And Villanuevaâs said to be a more âliberalâ man than Estradre.â
âWhich means heâs probably as far left as Michael Footâs toothbrush,â Sandy commented wryly and half to herself. âAnd that means heâll have no love for Americans. I hope he doesnât make trouble for you, Brad.â
âItâs a chance weâll have to take,â Brad replied. âMost peace officers would be pleased to know that sniper and chopper are dead. They were good, real good. Come on, letâs get going. Youâd best do the driving, boss-lady.â
âSandy,â Alice said as the British girl turned to open the Broncoâs door. âWhy did you kill Félix Moreno?â
Spinning around, Sandy stared at Alice and gasped, âI didnât kill him. I came from Ocampo, not San Franââ
Although the girl chopped off her incautious words, the cessation came just too late. Brad swiveled his eyes to his partner, then back in Sandyâs direction. Guilt showed briefly on the hitch-hikerâs features, then she composed them into an expressionless mask.
âWe didnât mention where heâd been killed,â Alice pointed out.
âI donât know what you mean,â Sandy declared in a brittle voice.
âThereâs a knifeâs sheath built into the side of her right boot, Brad,â Alice explained. âLike the kind that were the âinâ thing with the motor-bike gangs I met when I was with Juvenile.â
âThatâs not much to go on,â Sandy said.
