Chapter 9

In a far away land, carrying on the Third Crusade was a belligerent King Richard. He was determined to carry the cross of Christianity and force the world to accept his views. They would be converted or be killed. While he was considered to be the better of the brothers, his staunch approach for the cause of the Crusade had hardened him. The King has siphoned off all the money from his kingdom to fund the war. Mercenaries were hired, making for an expensive venture. Determined to conquer the world, he had run into a formidable opponent in Jerusalem. Realizing he could not possibly win the battle there, he retreated to make an attempt at taking over Egypt. Soon he was forced to give up there as well. Now the larger than life commander was compelled to scale back his plans.

The six and a half foot, red haired giant, was being brought down to size by an opposing religious group. But he needed more money and began to wonder what could possibly be going on back in Nottingham. After all, he had not received any messages or money from his brother in years. So he decided to send his own messenger to check on the state of his kingdom. Little did he know that an insider working for Prince John would see to it that the messenger would never arrive in Nottingham.

Soon his brother Phillip, somewhat ill at the time, decided to leave the Crusade and return to be with his brother John. He was now at odds with his brother Richard, thinking his campaign flawed. He decided the best way to oppose the king was to align his powers with John. The two of them would soon devise their own plans to remove the kingdom from the hands of the elder brother Richard. Little did he know that things were not going so well in Nottingham either. For at the heart of the problem was an obnoxious outlaw who had assembled a band of thieves, and they had just performed their biggest heist ever by looting the King’s treasury. It was now the job of the sheriff to bring the outlaws to justice and return the gold to Prince John.

Little did King Richard know his favorite niece was now in grave danger for having abetted the criminals. While no one could prove it yet, the sheriff and his party would soon have their evidence; and Maid Marian knew it. Word of Robin Hood and his men was difficult to come by. However, she knew from discussions with Lady Clorinda and her son Robert that the widows were doing fine; but none of them were willing to share information about their hero, Robin Hood. Each had their own selfish reasons for withholding that information. Maid Marian was happy for the noble ladies and chose not to allow jealousy to enter her mind. However, she sorely missed that renegade and longed for the next May Games to begin, fully expecting the daring archer would not be able to resist the chance to show off his skills once again.
