Vanessa

Vanessa found herself smiling and forced herself to stop. The middle of a board meeting was not the place to be smiling dreamily into space. She told herself to focus on what was in front of her and not think about the sunflowers Melanie had gotten her last night.

Every Monday, Melanie bought Vanessa flowers—to brighten the start of her week, she said. Vanessa always looked forward to it, wondering what colorful new flower Melanie would bring her next time.

Vanessa had taken her own twist to the tradition. At the end of every week, she bought Melanie chocolates, to sweeten the end of her week. Melanie always tried to guess what chocolates Vanessa would get, but she never got it right. Vanessa knew a specialized chocolate place that had endless ranges of fancy chocolates and even did custom-made ones.

Valentine’s day was coming up, and Vanessa was thinking of getting chocolates with Melanie’s name on them—one letter per chocolate, arranged in order. That in a heart-shaped box would be the perfect gift.

And now she was grinning like an idiot again. Vanessa looked back down at her notes and the various graphs they were going through in the very dull meeting. She’d much rather be at home with Melanie, making up silly pictures in the stars through the skylight or fucking her so thoroughly she could barely talk.

Now that thought was going to get her into trouble quickly here.

The meeting dragged on and on. It wasn’t even a productive meeting. Things were going smoothly in all areas of the business, and there wasn’t really a lot to discuss, other than some basic admin issues. They didn’t really need a meeting, but the shareholders expected a weekly meeting, and there had nearly been a riot when Vanessa suggested they skip it or do it over email.

She finally stepped out of the boardroom and headed to her office. She got out her phone and sent a text to Melanie.
