Chapter 9

Cameron didn’t think he’d be able to sleep with Jason sitting there, but he dozed off after just a few seconds. He woke up a little while later with a sore neck and an aching chest, but still better off than he’d been when he closed his eyes. He felt more refreshed than he’d been in a while, too, and that was weird. He could only attribute the difference to having Jason there, watching over him.

Which was stupid. Why should he feel any better with Jason watching over him than he would just by himself? That didn’t make sense. There wasn’t any emotional attachment between them, platonic or romantic, and the idea that he’d be so comforted by someone else’s mere presence that he would sleep more deeply sounded absurd. “How long was I out?” His voice was raspy, a wreck. Catherine must have done a number on his neck. He knew, from his days as an EMT, that he should probably go and get his throat checked out. There were plenty of delicate little structures in there that a person didn’t want to heal wrong, but Cameron knew exactly what kind of assumptions ER staff would make about him if he went in like this. He didn’t feel up to answering questions about his sex life right now.

“A couple of hours. No big deal. I texted Reid. He’s on his way home.” Jason leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “That Catherine. She’s a real piece of work, huh?”

Who’d have thought?” He managed a grin, so that Jason knew his sarcasm wasn’t aimed at him.

“I know. I mean, I knew in my head. I don’t…it’s hard to wrap my head around it when it’s right there in front of me, you know?” Jason blew out a sharp burst of air and sat back. “That’s kind of a big deal.”

“Maybe.” Cameron squirmed. He hated talking about Catherine and everything she’d done but Jason seemed to be trying to be less of an ass. so he felt like he should make just as much of an effort. “They said so at the time. The social workers, I mean. The people in the courts. But when I met the other kids in the system, their families were just as screwed up as mine was. Some were worse off.”

“For real?” Jason’s eyes bulged.

“Oh, sure. At least Catherine was going to jail. We were never going to have to go back and she was never going to have another kid to hurt. No one was trying to say it wasn’t her fault or that we had it coming, or that she was going to get better and we just had to hold on and be strong for our mom.” He rolled his eyes. “My
