“You don’t have to do that.” Bristol let her tone carry an edge as she caught Remington checking the Jeep’s side mirror again. “I know how to watch for a tail.”

His brown eyes aimed at her, no hint of irritation in response. “But you’re also busy driving. It’s my way of helping out.”

Seriously? She gripped the steering wheel tighter and glared at the traffic ahead, glad they only had a half mile to drive to get from Minnesota Falls to the Ceinture Dam downriver. Her interrupted sleep for the second night in a row left her nowhere near rested enough to deal with Remington or the emotional roller coaster he put her on.

The man could be so infuriating. Why did everyone seem to think she was completely unable to protect herself and do her job?

It didn’t help her mood that another downpour pelted the windshield, making it hard to see the road. Would the rain never stop? The last thing they needed right now was more water in the Mississippi.

“Have you heard anything from Agent Nguyen about progress?” Remington apparently decided changing the subject was a smart move.

She let out a breath, relaxing her hold on the wheel. She was letting fatigue and stress get to her, which could lead to sloppy searches and vulnerability to danger. “Just the lab results on the hamburger meat left at the Gellar Dam. It had rat poison mixed into it. Enough to kill a dog.”

“Yeah, I heard that. But I wondered if they’re any closer to finding the bomber.”

“I’m sure we’ll hear something if significant progress is made.”

“Right.” Frustration tensed his voice. “I’m thinking they need some help.”

She shot him a glance, easily spotting the determination in his taut, bearded jawline. “We need to let the trained investigators take care of it. My job is to find explosives before they detonate. Yours is to keep the dams safe. We need to do our jobs and let the investigators do theirs.”

She saw his head turn toward her in her peripheral.

“That would make sense if they were getting somewhere. And if your life wasn’t in danger until they nail this guy.”

She looked at him, regretting the action when she saw the concerned lines bunching on his forehead and the dark shade of his eyes. Her chest tightened, and she swung her gaze back to the road, vulnerable to a different kind of danger—the heart-melting effect of starting to believe he cared.

Softening toward him now would leave her at risk if he hadn’t changed and turned out to be as unreliable as he used to be. She swallowed. “The task force is organized to have the best of all the related law enforcement groups. I’m confident they’ll find the bomber soon. I just need to keep the dams safe until they do.”

“What about the bomber’s threat?” The extra roughness of his voice fluttered her pulse.

“You mean to hurt me?” She shrugged. “Likely a bluff.”

“Likely.” His tone carried his mistrust of the word as he
