MEGAN

We had seventy-two hours to change things. Seventy-two grueling, frenetic hours to prevent the Zs from participating in Fletch’s demonic agenda. Despite our efforts going door-to-door, thousands have gathered under the full moon, ready to annihilate Capitol Hill’s human population. One, they want revenge. Two, they think Fletch and his council will get them the cure. Nobody believed our motley crew when we told them otherwise.

The streets are crawling with Zs. We could be seen for miles with the flashlights and fire torches illuminating our ashen faces. Death hovers in the still, rank air.

We’ve had the plan drilled into us. While the mob creates a diversion, a small team will join Fletch on his quest to pay Don Meier a visit in Area 52, which is adjacent to Capitol Hill. Grady, Blake, Cinco, and Shaun are the few entrusted with the task. Judy and I volunteered for support. Judy’s the shifty-eyed, twitchy-lipped woman from the Temple. She gives me the creeps. Globs of coagulated pus constantly ooze from her maggot-infested scalp.

Rachel wanted to come along, though I managed to talk her out of it. No way am I letting her risk her life for Fletch and his council, especially over something this big. The motley crew of five have agreed to stay behind and keep her company, awaiting news from my end.

“Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family, thank you for answering the call to duty,” Grady addresses the horde. “With your timely assistance and support, our humble team will be able to sneak past the guards. We shall try our best to obtain the cure for all.”

The Zs cheer and applaud.

“The humans and us—we could have co-existed peacefully. Instead, we’ve been shunned by the rest of the world since the beginning. Why? We belong to that world. Mother Nature says so. It is ours by right. Ours to claim.”

The seeds of restlessness Grady has been planting all along bloom into rage as he continues his speech. Bright faces cloud up. Frowns deepen into scowls and snarls. Whispers travel throughout the mob.

He clears his throat and holds up his hands.

The crowd hushes.

“It is a shame some of us may not return. Our sacrifices will not be in vain. The rest of you shall be cured. We shall rise from the pits of Hell. No more living like scavengers. No more fear and worries. No more pain.”

“No more pain!” someone shouts. The rest follow. “No more pain. No more pain.”

I pull the hoodie over my head. I have to hand it to Grady. He sure knows how to get Zs riled up.

The chanting fades. The crowd parts to make room as a troop of shackled Empties pour onto the road, led by Fletch’s henchmen tossing meat as bait.

My stomach clenches. “What’re they doing here?” I whisper to Blake.

Avoiding my gaze, he whispers, “Fletch’s orders.”

The sinking sensation intensifies. Judging from Grady’s startled expression, he’s unaware, too. He trudges over to Fletch and mumbles something. I step closer.

“Spare Ursula, okay?” asks Grady. “We could use her.
