Kip didn’t know when he stopped running, but night had fallen over Skobia when he found himself laying on the forest floor, his face half-covered in fallen leaves, the night sky as his blanket. His torso moved with every deep breath he took, and he struggled with his thoughts as the cold ground cooled and centered him. Trees stood tall all around, big pines, and they enveloped him in a tomb of greenery where he could process what happened.

And he ignored the smoke rising into the air in the distance.

Slowly, the boy raised up. He looked back toward the farm with weary eyes, and he could not look away from the thick plume of black smoke that reached high into the night sky. The magical fire that he conjured was still burning, though Kip could not see the flames that licked at the remnants of the only home he ever had.

But he couldn’t look for long. He knew who’s souls were released that night.

Garth, Kip thought to himself, saying the names of his fallen friends. Garth had always been the quiet one, the sweet one, and before he was tortured into stupidity, he was the joking trickster of the boys. After the incident, Kip had always felt that he needed to take care of the sweet brute, though Garth was too proud a man to take the pity.

Kip could relate to that well.

Rodric, Kip let the name circle his mind as he thought of his dark-skinned friend. Rodric was always the most empathetic of them all, always willing to sit and listen to a stranger’s story. He had shed many tears with the serfs of Marshwillow Farm, and he had confided in Kip once that he was saving to buy his freedom from farm life. Kip’s hand found the small satchel of gold that he had grabbed before running away, and Kip hoped that his friend would not be too angry with him.

Kip needed it and Rodric was gone.

Ivor... that name hurt the worst. Ivor had been looking forward to so much in life. Marriage, companionship, the love of a woman, children... All of those dreams were snuffed out with him, all because Kip uttered that terrible spell that set the whole cabin ablaze.

Kip shut his eyes and pressed his face to the earth. Try as he might, he could not get the image out of his head. He could not unsee the way the flames licked at the old wooden walls. The images of his friends burning alive would forever live in his mind, and Kip did not think that he would ever be free of them. At least Garth had died quickly, almost instantly, and Rodric was spared pain. But it seemed that the magic was only strong enough to torture Ivor until death finally took him.

Hot tears sparked in Kip’s eyes as he clutched his hands around the only things that he owned in the world: the small sack of coins stolen from his dead friends, and the grimoire.
