On the subject of motors, I must mention one job that went very pear-shaped but gave us a good laugh in the process. My mate Mick was helping me with a bit of debt-collecting. The bloke we were after for a nice few thousand quid had a couple of tasty mates we knew might give trouble. Mick, a nice laidback fella with a bit of form, but sound as a pound in a crisis, said he’d pick me up because my motor was in for a service.

We set off towards the geezer’s home in Wickford but, before we got there, we saw his vehicle outside a farm shop and him and his mates buying some vegetables. Mick pulled the car in behind them.

‘Right,’ I said, ‘I’ll get some tools from the boot and we’ll tackle them here.’

‘OK,’ said Mick.

I dashed round the back of the car and opened the boot. Fuck me. It was full of Barbie dolls, My Little Pony, roller blades, all sorts of kids stuff. Not a tool in sight. Then Mick remembered he’d picked up his girlfriend’s Toyota Corolla instead of his own car that morning and it was packed with her little girls’ stuff. I looked at Mick, he looked at me and we looked at the tasty geezers we were supposed to take on.

‘I hope this fucking Barbie is loaded,’ I said, picking up one of the dolls. With that, we both creased up laughing, jumped in the car and giggled all the way home. Another day would do for this one.
