Chapter 8

While Barrett paid the bill, Jacey stepped outside to wait for him.

The blast of cold air felt good on her skin. After eating such an extravagant meal and drinking all that lovely wine, she welcomed the fresh air. She wrapped her arms around herself. The snow had stopped falling, leaving behind a fresh white blanket on the ground.

“Hey, sweetheart, you cold?” A rough voice behind her sent chills up her back.

She turned around and dropped her hands to her sides.

Two men in jeans and a winter coat leered at her. She could smell beer on their breath, and she knew they were drunk.

She didn’t answer them but looked back inside to see if she could spot Barrett. One of the men stepped in her line of vision, obstructing her view.

“Excuse me.” She tried to step around him to go back toward the restaurant, but he grabbed her arm.

“That’s not very nice. Where are your manners, little Southern girl?” He grinned down at her.

A low rumble erupted behind the man as Barrett came barreling out the restaurant doors. He plowed into the man holding her and knocked him away.

“You don’t ever fucking touch her, do you understand?” Barrett stepped in front of Jacey, becoming a wall between her and her aggressors. Fear beat like a drum in her chest.

“I don’t see a ring on her finger so that means she’s free,” the man smirked.

Barrett plowed his fist into the human’s face, sending him hurling to the ground. The other man looked like he was coming to his friend’s aid until Barrett rounded on him with a look so lethal it could kill. The second guy stepped back.

“You broke my fucking nose,” the guy on the ground cried out.

Jacey looked around, and by this time a small crowd had gathered. The hostess in the restaurant had stepped outside.

“What’s going on out here?” The older gentleman with graying hair and a suit looked at Barrett and then the guy on the ground.

“He broke my fucking nose,” the guy cried out.

The manager looked at Barrett and scowled.

“He put his hands on Jacey.” Barrett glared. He looked like he was ready to fight the manager too.

“Is this right?” The manager looked around Barrett at her. “Did he touch you?”

“He did. I was trying to walk back inside, and he started to harass me.” She put her hand on Barrett’s arm. She could feel the muscles bunching under the material of his clothes. His anger was palpable.

“Aren’t you going to do something? He broke my nose!”

The manager narrowed his gaze to the man on the ground. “Then I suggest you don’t put your hands on ladies. And if you don’t get your sorry carcass away from the front of my restaurant, I’m going to call the police.”

“Look, asshole, I have rights … ” The guy on the ground started to stand and face the manager, but his friend stepped in front of him.

The manager narrowed his eyes and pulled out his cell phone. “I’m calling the police.
