CYRUS

Thankfully, with Tamon’s guidance, I was able to heal my mate. My hands on his should’ve had him crying out in pain, but almost instantly, it was as if his pain traveled through me and fell away. Like I was drawing it out, similar to sucking the venom out of a snake bite. And while I knew it was pain being whisked from his body, I didn’t feel it as such. I needed to talk to Tamon about it later, because so much that was happening made no sense.

“Let me see.” Bas took his hands from mine, and they were back to normal—well, almost normal. The calluses that had formed during his work around here were gone, too. His hands were perfect, as if nothing had ever happened to them…ever. “Wow!”

Wow indeed. As much as Tamon teased us about going to the store to get salve, salve wouldn’t have done shit. They were third degree burns, and at best they would’ve been blistered.

“Thank you.” He kissed me. “I was a bit worried there.”

As were we all, I was sure.

“May I?” Azar asked, reaching for Bas’s hands. “Well done, Cyrus.”

“Thanks?” I wasn’t sure how to respond to that. It wasn’t as if I had a skill of healing and jumped in and saved the day. I was scared to death that Bas would have his hands destroyed by the fire he put out to save us and was just doing the best I could.

“I have to give you credit, Bas. You handled the fire like a pro, so calm and cool, while at the same time jumping into action.” Azar’s praise had Bas smiling. It touched me, too. I didn’t realize how much Azar’s approval of Bas would mean to me. Apparently, a great deal.

“They will all learn to control their flame with time. Us foxes have it easy; we don’t have our furry side come out until we are in puberty, and even at that age, many have issues controlling their beast. I couldn’t imagine if we were shifting at their ages.”

I hadn’t thought of it that way. He was right. It was a lot to expect of a child their age. No wonder phoenixes historically tended to live in things like caves and castles. They were fireproof, or mostly fireproof, depending what was in them.

“Still, you were calm and didn’t just spell our young,” Tamon said, still half in, half out of the house. “It would’ve been easier and safer just to do that the second the flame emerged. Instead you extinguished just the flames, holding him so the magic didn’t slam into him like a wave.”

“I did?” Bas looked completely confused by Tamon’s words. “I mean, I did pick him up and do an extinguishing spell instead of just flinging magic in his direction, but that was me trying not to scare him. Did holding him do that? Protect him in that way?”

“You really don’t know how strong your magic is, do you?” Tamon said. “Yes, you protected
