1. The Cleveland Street scandal concerned an incident that occurred in July 1889, when police raided the male brothel at No. 19. A major cover-up ensued to protect, among others, the Duke of Clarence. Ernest Parke, editor of The North London Press, was prosecuted for criminal libel by Lord Euston, whom he named as a frequent visitor to the establishment. Potential witnesses were spirited abroad. Cleveland Street features in the Ripper story because Walter Sickert had a studio there for a while, and Annie Elizabeth Crook was supposed to have worked at a shop nearby. Inspector Abberline and Chief inspector Swanson led the investigation into the Cleveland Street affair.

2. UNSUB = Unknown Subject in FBI terminology.

3. Murder by drowning is relatively rare, whereas disposal of a body in water after homicide is more common. In the latter case, the ordinary signs of drowning are not evident. Druitt ’s body was believed to have been in the water about a month and was weighted with stones that would have taken it to the bottom. As gas formed inside the corpse due to putrefaction, it would have floated to the surface. In winter, a body will probably come to the surface in about two weeks, but takes longer when weighted.
