Carol and Kenny took Gary to the beach.

“Kenny took one side of Gary,” Carol said, “and I took the other side,”

The three of them staggered like Gary’s Stooges down Avalon Pier, where he saw the dolphins in the water.

“I want my feet in the sand,” Gary said.

Carol and Kenny took him to the water’s edge.

“Do you want me to carry you?” Kenny asked.

“I want to walk,” Gary said.

As he waded in, he said, “Look, Carol, a seashell.”

Half an oyster shell.

Kenny picked it up and put it in his pocket.

“Don’t worry, Pop-pop,” he said, “I’ll make sure we bring it back with us.”

They took Gary back to the van and washed the sand off his feet.

“I think I’m ready to go home now,” Gary said.

Carol still has the shell.
