Chapter Seven

In the end it was Will and Eddie driving to the airport in Hugh’s incredibly posh car, with Evan giddy and nervous in the back seat.

“I don’t know why I’m freaking out. It makes no sense.” He forced his knee to stop bouncing.

“Aww. You’re so cute! And yeah, but it makes a little bit of sense, actually. It’s not like you’re gonna take her back to your love nest. You’re taking her back to a house full of Jase and a bunch of people she doesn’t know.” He caught Evan’s eye in the rear view mirror. “By the way, everyone will totally mock you if you guys immediately go downstairs to have sex, but they pretty much expect you to, so not-doing that will probably also mean mockery.”

“Not mockery,” Eddie amended. He never spoke louder than soft.

“At least kind of mockery. But like…affectionate mockery. Anyway, I’m totally excited to meet Cait. And Lucy’s totally totally excited to meet Cait.” Will laughed.

Evan buried his head in the back of the driver side seat. “Shut up.”

“Oh yeah. Does Cait share when you guys are in the same place? Also, should I not say ‘you guys’? Shit. Eddie, hit me when I say that.”

“Okay.”

“Uh, well, she probably won’t tell you to stop. And she’d probably be annoyed with me for telling you not to say that. But yeah, she notices.”

“I have this. I mean, I should really stop saying it anyway, because it’s problematic, but I don’t have a good alternative. And also, I’m a cissexist ass.”

Evan tousled Will’s hair. “Aw, you said ‘cissexist’. That’s so cute.”

“Hey! I can be woke! Eddie, defend my honor! I’m kinda woke, right?”

Eddie reached over to turn on the radio instead of replying.

“Jerk!” Will laughed again.

“You are kinda woke,” Eddie said solemnly, and turned the volume up.

They hit traffic on the way to the airport—“This is when everyone from the East Bay is heading into the city, but once we pass the bridge and get on 880 it should clear up,” Will explained, and Evan nodded along without paying attention—but by the time they got off the freeway Cait had texted to say she was waiting outside and Evan could hardly keep himself in his seat.

It had been two months. He was almost desperate to see her, smell her, definitely to hold her.

She was standing at the far end of the first terminal. And god, she looked fucking wonderful, tall and broad and wearing one of her hot, clingy dresses, the kind of dress she used as armor even when it got her hate from assholes.

“That’s Cait!” He was already unbuckling his seat belt before Will even pulled to the side. “Oh my god, she’s here.”

“At least let me stop the car before you—” Will’s words were lost in the sound of the door opening.

The car lurched to a halt and Evan was already out of it, tumbling over his feet, heading for Cait.

Who looked up, grinning, and dropped her bags to hug him. “Baby.” Her lips brushed his ear.
