Ted Flynn filled his pipe and lighted a match, stirring the flame over the tobacco. A thick plume of smoke rose into the air over his desk. He blew out the match and looked through the smoke at the two men standing across from him.

‘What’s the word on the store, boys?’ he asked.

‘Pretty much everything is gone,’ said Al King. ‘Anything that wasn’t burned was ruined when they put out the fire. Also, the smoke destroyed a lot of things.’

‘It’s going to cost a lot of money to rebuild it. Maybe more than it’s worth.’

‘The fire would have spread to the buildings next door if he hadn’t fired those shots,’ King observed. ‘They were barely able to put it out – it was blazing real good.’

‘The bastard is crazy. He’s out of his mind.’ Flynn stared past King to a point on the wall. ‘I should have had someone on guard duty there,’ he said quietly.

‘I’ll make it happen,’ said Don Rowland. ‘Starting tonight.’

‘And put someone at the boarding house, too. I want riders with guns on duty here at the Rimrock – at least five of them.’ The two men nodded. Flynn sat back in his chair and brushed some stray flecks of tobacco off his shirt. ‘Now we have to consider our next move. We can’t sit around waiting for Chesham. We’ve got to find him.’

‘You have any idea where he might be hiding, boss?’ asked King.

Flynn shook his head. ‘No idea at all,’ he said. ‘That’s why I want you, Don, to get some men together and take to the hills. I want y’all to check every gully, every box canyon – everything. Take some provisions – it should take you at least two days to do a thorough job. If he is hiding in the hills, then the only place he could be is south of here.’ He glanced at King. ‘You’re going to be in charge of security here at the ranch, and in town.’

‘I’ll see to it,’ King said.

‘How did he even know I own the store? I didn’t own it when he went away to New Mexico. Someone is giving him information.’

‘Who would do that?’ asked Rowland.

‘I don’t know. But when we get our hands on Hank Chesham, we’re going to ask him some real hard questions. We’re going to find out who’s been helping him. Whoever it is, they’re going to pay.’

‘So you want him taken alive, no matter what?’

Flynn drew on his pipe before answering. ‘I would prefer taking him alive. There are things I want to know. But if he won’t come willingly and the only thing you can do is shoot him then . . . go ahead and kill him.’
