We approached our quarry from three different directions. The clearing was about 75 meters across, so all of us had range. How fast the giant ran remained one missing variable. But we had that planned for.

Wren would open up first, since his spells had casting time and my rifle did not.

Blue-white frost appeared around our towering target, engulfing it in a short-lived swirling column of winter storm. The spell’s damage only took it to 92%. I’d hoped for better, but it would also reduce the brute’s speed, attacks, and defenses by 10%. Frost clung to its beard and hair when the rest dissipated.

It looked all over, confused and hunting the source. When its head turned away from me most, I took the shot I’d lined up. This needed to count. Aiming added +50 to my Ranged Attack score but my Trainee’s Sniper Shot ability added another 50. More important, it also raised Crit Chance 50, to 124. Which I figured meant 12.4% success rate.

However the math worked out, I got the critical hit. No indicators of bonus headshot damage popped up. But it still staggered the colossus. I reveled in the crit notification and gave a haughty laugh.
