Chapter Twelve

No one could say Janet hadn’t given it her all. She’d continued the experiment with Sean for three years, and tonight, she was taking things to the next stage. She’d done exactly as she’d promised him so far, having sex and giving him therapy, and it was obvious the arrangement still suited him. She’d even go so far as to say he cared about her. His eyes always lit up when he saw her, and he was affectionate, touching her when he didn’t need to, asking about her day and how she felt.

He was the perfect man material, and she wanted him all to herself now she’d seen all sides of him. She felt safe that he was the one for her, safe enough to move it along.

They’d just had sex in a hotel, something she suggested they do every now and then to spice things up. Him visiting her place was all well and good, but it had become too ‘man meets secretly with the other woman’ and she was past all that now. Yes, they went out for meals in the West End, and she paid for them to see shows, so it was kind of like they were dating, but she wanted the domesticity, the commitment, and she aimed to get it.

If she’d judged it right, now was the prime time to do it.

“How do you feel about us?” she asked, cuddling into his side so she could look up and see his expression.

He smiled. “I love what we have. Like we said from the start, this arrangement suits both of us.”

“Arrangement sounds a bit…clinical now, doesn’t it? Especially since we’ve got to know each other so well.” Janet had only shown him the side of herself she wanted him to see—the caring, ‘better option than the wife’ woman, the one he should want to be with instead of Whitney. If he knew who she really was, someone who struggled not to hurt animals and people and spoke to an entity who lived inside her on a daily basis, he’d run a mile.

“It’s what we agreed on.” He stiffened, closing his eyes as if he waited with dread for what she’d say next. Like he knew she was about to pop his balloon.

“I know, but things change, people get closer. New priorities spring up.”

His eyes snapped open. “What are you saying, that you want more?”

“Don’t you? You said last week you wished you’d met me first.”

“I know, but…”

“But I’m fixing you, and I need you to fix me.”

“I don’t even know what that means, Janet. I can’t be with you permanently. There’s Emerald to think about.”

Panic took over. She was losing him. Losing his interest. “She’ll get over it. My dad left, and I’ve turned out all right.” I’m such a liar. “Kids are resilient.”

“She’s five next week. Five. Too little for me to leave.”

“But you can’t stay stuck in that life forever, not when you have me and a better life to go to. Why can’t you grab happiness? Whitney isn’t the one for you, I am, you know that.
