A week later, I bump into my neighbour, Tommy The Postman. At the end of a riveting conversation about his shift being changed and the eggy smell emanating from his sink, he asks, ‘Did you hear that The Sphinx has retired?’

Uh-oh.

‘Retired as in she’s retired,’ I ask, ‘or retired as in she’s been retired?’

Tommy doesn’t know the details, or indeed what the fuck I am talking about.

While I don’t exactly feel good about it, I don’t feel like Raskolnikov after murdering the pawnbroker either. I’m twenty-one years old and almost starving to death in a one-room garret during Margaret Thatcher’s ‘managed decline’ of the city. Sparring with piss-taking scallies by day and depression by night, I have more than enough monsters in my life.

In bed now, I’m taking long glugs from the Benylin bottle that I keep on top of the electricity meter. Switching off my bedside lamp, I lay in the darkness, watching the amber headlights from passing taxis bend and warp across the ceiling. As the codeine in the cough syrup begins to pull upon my eyelids, I imagine The Sphinx laying in her bed in the dark. In my head, she’s drawing invisible equations in the air, still trying to work out how I did it.
