The best way to deal with her mother-in-law, Tracey decided, was to go all-out mob-handed. Not only did she have Max and her two sons with her, but Ricky’s wife Kayla had also popped over to offer some much needed moral support and, when it came to Patricia, Tracey had a nasty feeling she was going to need all the support that she could get.

Sitting at the kitchen table, she and Kayla were sipping on a cup of coffee awaiting Patricia’s arrival with bated breath.

‘Any news on the car showroom?’ Kayla asked as she blew on her drink in an attempt to cool the hot liquid down.

Tracey shook her head, and giving the kitchen door a quick glance, she lowered her voice. ‘I don’t know what to make of it all,’ she mused. ‘I heard the recorded message myself and the bastard definitely hinted at destroying all of the businesses, so why haven’t they done that? It just makes no sense. It’s like they’re toying with Max, like they’re getting a kick out of riling him up.’ She rested her elbows on the table and, wrapping her fingers around the mug, she took a long sip, contemplating the situation. ‘They wanted a reaction out of him and now that they’ve got one they’ve completely dropped off the radar. They’ve got to be sick in the head, haven’t they?’

For a few moments, Kayla watched her mother-in-law over the rim of the mug. ‘You don’t think…’ She gave a little shrug, almost as though she were afraid to say the words out loud. ‘That Kenny could be involved?’ she whispered.

‘I don’t know darling,’ Tracey sighed, although it would certainly explain why there had been no further onslaughts. Despite Max’s insistence that Kenny wouldn’t have the means to have had a hand in the arson attack, Tracey knew for a fact that there was enough bad blood between the two men to make Kenny a strong contender. Even now, two years on, it still seemed inconceivable to her that Kenny could have been responsible for Terry’s murder; the two men hadn’t just been business partners, but they had also been good friends. Not only had Terry trusted him, but she had too, so much so that she would never in a million years have suspected Kenny or his son Shaun of being behind the execution and that was exactly what it had been, an execution. Shot in the back, Terry hadn’t stood a chance, let alone been in the position to fight back or try to defend himself.

Still, the burning question remained: what possible reason could there have been for Kenny to not only want to kill his best friend but to also see it through and have him murdered in cold blood? All through the trial Kenny had remained tight lipped and given no explanation for his actions. In fact, he’d denied his part in the killing until he was blue in the face. He’d been so convincing that at one point even Tracey herself had had doubts about his guilt.
