Caves under the Vatican

Leaves made scratching sounds in Roman piazzas in mid-October as strong winds from Umbria buffeted the ancient city of seven hills. Dry branches scraped Sarah’s garden walls, and yellow leaves floated like tiny origami sailboats on the fountain bowl’s surface. Her wedding was only five weeks away, so she was cherishing her last moments alone as she snuggled in her window seat. She couldn’t, however, stop processing disturbing thoughts about the fourteen-year-old Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, an activist for girls’ education who had been shot in the head by Taliban gunmen. Why so many children, really remarkable and good children? As more light comes in, darkness is closing in all around us. What is happening—really?

The morning dew glistened on her windows as the first rays of sunlight came over the garden wall. As the sunlight illuminated the leaded windows, she wondered what would happen if she tuned into the images forming in the bubbles. Why not?

She touched the ruby as the air bubbles transformed into miniature spherical worlds of birds, flowers, sunlight, and garden. Everything that exists vibrates on curving inner surfaces! Other dimensions flow into the garden on the edges of the color spectrum. She stared into her favorite bubble, green eyes reflected back to her as the ruby vibrated beneath her fingers. It worries me when Simon talks about the “gatekeepers.” I want to see what goes on in the cave system under the Bernini altar. Sarah wanted the timeline of the Vatican Necropolis.

Forms appeared within thick mist swirling in the bubble. Oh! I see Paleolithic images from maybe fifty thousand years ago. Way beneath the Vatican, there is a cave that was on the surface during the Ice Age. I see Neanderthals scraping away the soil with antlers. In silence they place the body of a very small girl wrapped in rough woven cloth inside the cave. Her face is painted red. Her body is surrounded by wildflowers.

Sarah continued staring into the bubble as color spectrums illuminating the inner surfaces formed miniscule rainbows. Another scene unfolded. Now the walls of the cave have large paintings of wild animals, trees, and plants. People are playing flutes and drumming and gathering—Magdalenian people fifteen thousand years ago! They go on visionary journeys by assuming a special posture with their legs crossed and hands holding their knees. The bubble became a round jewel of light like a small crystal ball. Another scene opened. A circle of people stand with their hands clenched at their sternums and their eyes closed. A drummer beats very fast on tight skin; the staccato force makes them sway. They wear finely woven tunics and have braided hair—Etruscan people three thousand years ago. They just buried someone.

The bubble lost its intensity and glowed from within like the last embers in a fire. I see a small hut on the surface above the cave entrance. I see crude graves marked by wooden headstones or crossed sticks. I wonder if the people buried here knew about the cave? Her ruby began to vibrate very fast and felt hot.
