Hadn’t the Stuttgarter Zeitung printed his picture? Didn’t a group of Gentiles serenade him with Eine Kleine Nachtmusik? And hadn’t he got an unfailing talisman? The Iron Cross, First Class, hung over his bed and his officer’s sword next to a picture of the Goethe-Haus in Weimar.
