And Victor forever, is cursed to stay,

Inside of his lighthouse, swinging away.

INTO DARKNESS

The way the light from the fluorescent fittings glinted off the blade, made James look away sharply. He wasn’t one for bright lights. Living in a basement apartment will do that to a man. As he examined the craftsmanship of the handle, the brown, aged leather woven around the top, the perfect curve of the steel as it moved around and down to the first point, he already sensed that this was out of his price range. As many collectibles as James had collected, he had never quite been in a financial slump as he now was, and yet he knew he had to have this piece.

“Okay, so how much is it?” he asked the vendor.

“For a fine Klingon such as yourself? I could part with it for three- thousand.”

James choked on his water.

“Dollars?!” he exclaimed.

“No, bars of Gold Pressed Latinum,” came the sarcastic reply.

James’ expression changed from surprise to acceptance that it was too much. Last month he barely made rent, and nearly had to sell his prized possession, one of the chairs from the set of the Enterprise-D Observation Lounge. The vendor seemed to sense this, but his eyes followed another shine from the light to James’ waist.

“Hey, what do you have there?” he asked, pointing to the item.

James, confused at first, realised what he was pointing at and removed the dagger from his waist.

“This? I got this from Comic-Con 1994. It’s a replica of Worf’s dagger from ‘Ethics’ where he asks Riker to end his life. Why? You interested?”

James could sense the tables had turned. This was not a replica of Worf’s dagger. James had bought this cheap from a cosplayer in the UK and refined it and customised it himself. But this was looking like a worthy loss if it got him the Bat’leth.

The vendor nodded and asked to see it close up. James was confident in his work, so handed it over. He seemed convinced. James smiled. He had been making props for years, since The Next Generation had started, and he’d gotten pretty good at it.

“It’s one of my most prized collectibles. I didn’t even wanna take it out today, but it looks so good with the rest of this Klingon uniform. Out of interest, what’s it worth to you?”

This was where the battle was won or lost. James could easily make a replacement but had no real idea what the true replica would be worth. It was now that James would see if the guy would be honest or try and scam him. That’s why he’d asked worth to you rather than simply asking what it was worth.

He turned the blade over in his hand several times, admiring the craftsmanship. The exchange had also attracted the attention of dozens of other people who had come across from other booths to witness what was going on.

“The workmanship is exquisite, and the weight of the handle in comparison to the blade is perfectly balanced.
