Chapter Five
The work at CFB Suffield had to continue on as usual, even without Mitch, and Chris did not have an immediate officer in charge. The day to day tasks had not changed at all for him. There was still so much work for him to do. Then in the early summer of 1967, Chris was called in to a meeting with his new immediate superior officer at CFB Suffield. It was at this meeting he was told that the direction of his work will change for the upcoming coming months. But after that, it would likely return to normal for him.
He was not told much about the changes, but he learned that a team of soldiers with the PPCLI (Princess Patriciaâs Canadian Light Infantry) had been sent up north to Devon Island in the arctic to retrieve a downed large Soviet aircraft, it was likely a long-range bomber (believed at that time by Chris to be a Tupolev TU-95 long-range bomber). He was told that the surviving flight crew were all defecting to Canada and had asked for asylum. Once brought from the Arctic, they were to be housed in the underground bunker built only a few years ago that is located here at CFB Suffield. This bunker would be re-purposed as an underground living quarters for the defectors coming here.
They could never allow the defectors to be spotted by the new soviet spy satellites, and they might not even think of looking here at this base. Also, the purpose of housing them underground was to hide them from those above ground too. There is an old saying that âloose lips sink ships. Keeping these people underground would help to keep the knowledge of their existence away from those above ground, and therefore help to prevent the Soviet Union from learning where they are too. Of course, everyone already believed that the Soviets not only knew about this base, but they also knew about the underground bunker that had only been completed about four or five years before. This was a time when spies were believed to be all over NATO countries, so the assumption was always that the Soviets were aware of this bunker and others throughout Canada from the very moment the ground was broken to begin construction on them.
Chris would be reassigned to a whole new job here at Suffield Base. He would be tasked as the one to oversee the set up and development of the underground bunker for the arrival of their âguests.â In addition to this task, he was assigned the responsibilities of setting up an old Quonset hut to be the administration building for the staff allocated to this project. In addition, between the Quonset hut and the bunker there was an old decommissioned Hangar building that was still in very good shape. There was only a short distance apart from these three structures.
Chris was tasked with overseeing the job of converting the hanger to both a warehouse for the storage of
