Chapter Six
âYou look stunning, Monica! Joe is a lucky man!â
Monica grimaced, regarding her reflection critically. âYou think itâs alright?â
âAre you kidding me? All brides should look as beautiful.â Madison smiled up at her friend from the settee where she was resting before the ceremony. The women were getting ready in the bridal room of Celebrationâs non-denominational church, making last-minute adjustments to their attire before the ceremony began. âWould your maid-of-honor lie to you?â
âI guess not,â Monica conceded, fussing with her skirt. She turned to her daughter. âWhat do you think, sweetie?â
âYou look like a princess, Mommy!â Kimber gushed, enthralled by the pageantry.
âThank you, sweetheart. I feel like a princess.â
âDoes that make Joe your Prince Charming?â
âI guess it does.â
Kimber thought this over carefully, applying six-year-old logic to the scenario. âI hope he doesnât turn into a frog.â
Monica laughed. âIf he does, Iâll be sure to kiss him and turn him back.â
Satisfied with her motherâs reply, Kimber scampered out of the room in search of her soon-to-be cousins. The girls were more intrigued by the gifts â oohing and aahing over each brightly wrapped present as it was placed on the reception table â than they were their roles as bridesmaids in the wedding.
âSpeaking of Prince Charming; howâs Loren?â Monica asked casually once her daughter was out of earshot. She already knew from Joe that Madison hadnât spoken to the best man since the night after the accident, but she was curious what her friend would say.
âI imagine youâd know better than I would. Didnât he throw Joe a bachelor party last weekend?â
âIf you call drinking beer and shooting pool at Deuceâs a bachelor party. And stop avoiding the question. Whatâs going on between you two? I thought you were getting along.â
âWe are. Getting along, I mean.â Avoiding Monicaâs pointed stare, Madison adjusted her sling, careful not to dislodge the babyâs breath that decorated it.
Monica wasnât buying it. âReally? Doesnât that necessitate being in contact with one another? From what I hear, youâve gone out of your way to avoid Loren since the accident. You donât blame him, do you?â
âNo! Of course not! It wasnât his fault.â
âSo why are you ignoring him?â
âIâm not. Iâve been busy getting ready for the wedding.â Truth be told, she was avoiding him. Loren had called her the morning after he drove her home from the hospital, but she hadnât answered, letting it go through to voicemail. And sheâd been dodging all his other attempts to make contact since then. She knew she was being petty, but she had only to look at the earring sheâd hung from her vanity mirror to justify her actions.
Evading Monicaâs pointed stare, she glanced at the clock. âDo we have to get into this now? Youâre getting married in a few minutes. Letâs concentrate on your happily-ever-after, okay?â
âMadisonââ
A tap on the door interrupted any further conversation. âCome in.â
Joeâs parents entered the room. âOh, my, donât you look beautiful! Doesnât she look beautiful, dear?â Fran looked to her husband for confirmation.
âShe does at that,â Bill answered, kissing Monicaâs cheek lightly.
