The next day, as I sat on the ground in the storage building, feeling desperate and frustrated, I looked at the empty cardboard pile placed in one corner of the building. At that moment, I felt more worthless than those boxes. They were at least valuable to someone who had carefully placed them in the building. I felt like no one cared about me or my family.
All of our attempts to get out of Duhok were failing. We felt like mice stuck in the trap. We flopped in all directions to escape this trap but to no avail. There was no escape. It was an insulting feeling. I had run out of solutions. What was this feeling of helplessness? Was it the end? At that moment, it seemed that we would need a miracle to get out of the city. Our survival depended on the Peshmerga forces resisting and preventing the terrorists from storming the city
Last week, I was studying at one of the best universities in the world, and my dream was to finish my studies and go back to work in my country. Now I am stuck here with my wife and children in Iraq. Outside, terrorists pursued us, intending to kill me, and to enslave my wife and my children. Despair overtook me. The sense of helplessness was killing me, and in a moment of desperation I decided to send a message to Lotta and Maggan. I had lost all hope and realized that everything had collapsed and ended.
I sent the SMS and threw the phone to my side and then I went back to look at the cardboard boxes again.
