CHAPTER TEN

“MAYBE IF YOU tell me something highly sensitive about yourself,” Trixie decided, tilting her head to one side, considering. “I’ll let you buy me lunch. One lunch.”

Don’t tell her anything, he warned himself.

Daniel Riverton could feel his whole world shifting on its axis. Was he really nearly begging this girl to let him buy her lunch? Was he really going to exchange confidences with her for the honor?

“So, tell me one thing about you that no one knows.”

He felt relieved. That could be just about anything.

“I have on plaid boxers,” he said smoothly, and winked at her.

Other women he knew would have laughed. Other women he knew would have accepted this as an intimacy.

But Trixie looked faintly appalled and largely disappointed in him. Why did he care? Why did her disappointment feel like an arrow going straight for his heart?

Because she had trusted him, doped up or not. Something in her had told her she could trust him and she had told him highly personal things about herself. Now, she had trusted him to tell her something back. And not about the color of his shorts, either.

He had a feeling, after the Miles fiasco, her trust in men was low, and that right now he could either restore it somewhat, or make it go lower still.

He was not the right person for this job! He was not the right person to convince her there was a man out there, somewhere, who was not a miserable self-centered cad, someone who was worthy of her dreams.

It seemed like this responsibility had come out of nowhere. And he was not prepared for it.

What about the rest of the food he’d ordered? He was going to have to call Greta and cancel the five days of Champagne meals.

What had he been thinking ordering all those meals? For four? He wasn’t sticking around for five days! He wouldn’t have a secret left!

“When I was in my first year of university?” he said.

Everything inside him screamed, do not tell her this. He looked at Trixie. Something in her eyes called to him, told him it would be okay, told him he could trust her with it.

“I met a girl.” Shut up. “We went out for two years. I loved her. I had never felt that way before.”

In the distance, he watched the twins racing up the ladder of the slide, nearly on top of each other, sliding down squealing, Molly first, Pauline’s legs scissored around her.

He didn’t seem to be able to go on.

Trixie’s hand crept into his. “Did she die?” she whispered.

He snorted and looked back at her. “It was a shipwreck, but it wasn’t Titanic.”

“He dies in Titanic.”

Trixie was way too up on her romantic tragedy, where the reason for endings was death. Real life was so much less dramatic. He should take his hand out of hers. The warmth of her hand, the softness of it, the smallness of it, was like an enchantment. He was way too tired for this.
