The day was not without interest if one liked to look at flora and fauna while taking a steam bath. But it was still one long hot day. Captain Gringo finished the books heâd brought along and as he tossed the last one overboard, something big pulled it under with a silent swirl in the inky surface. He grimaced and lit another smoke. He hadnât been planning on a swim anyway. Heâd been puzzled when someone had told him few of the river people knew how to swim, despite spending most of their lives on the water. The reason was becoming obvious. As heâd seen when he shot that cayman after Borita, it wasnât really safe to swim right off the docks of Manaus. Up here in the wilder country nobody would last long enough in the river to learn to swim. When people fell overboard, up here, something ate them before they could drown, so what the hell.
A million years later the sun was low above the west bank and the river ran blood red. Sousa signaled back and Captain Gringo pulled around the supply canoes and moved up to shout, âYeah, weâd better start thinking of a place to tie up. See if we can make a few more kilometers before the light fails, but keep your eye out for an island with high banks. I donât want anyone waking up with a cayman in bed with them!â
Sousa agreed and Captain Gringo dropped back to let him lead. They came to a fork where the water on either side could just as well be the main channel. Sousa picked the left one to have more light. But long before the sky grew really dark, they found themselves in a dark tunnel of branches meeting overhead as the channel rapidly narrowed. Sousa hove to. When the American rejoined him, Sousa shouted across, âWeâre up a blind alley. This is an old oxbow cut off. The passage ahead is blocked by floating timber and slit.â
Captain Gringo wondered what else was new. He said, âItâll be buggy in here, too. Letâs move back to open water and tie up near the point. The banks are high and the ground looks solid.â
âItâs not an island, is it?â
âNo. But weâre almost surrounded by water. What do you want, an egg in your cerveza?â
There was no current, once theyâd shut their throttles. Captain Gringo ordered dead slow and took the lead going back the way theyâd come. He met Maureenâs boat coming up the false channel. The redhead was up on the flying bridge, conning her pilot from her better visual position. She waved and he waved back, shouting, âDead end. Weâre camping down on the point.â
Maureen called something down to her pilot and the cruiser turned to lead by a cable length. She sure was a pushy dame, considering she hadnât been invited to this party.
As Maureen dropped anchor near the point, Captain Gringo spotted the smoke of something bigger than usual moving up the other true channel.
