Captain Gringo nodded and said, “That’s the way I see it. They’ve attracted enough attention smoking up those earlier expeditions. The two fruity traders are no menace to anyone and, as you say, El Redentor can’t boss the river much if he chases everyone away from it.”

Felipe guided the launch to the boat landing below the trading post and ran the bow ashore again. As they all piled out, Simmons came out on the veranda, followed by the smaller Yashiwara, who was hopping from one foot to the other like a little kid who had to take a leak. The Japanese looked like a pretty girl’s head had been stuck on the body of a skinny little guy. Captain Gringo decided Yashiwara probably found it confusing, too.

As they came up the steps the Japanese giggled, shook hands with himself, and said, “Oh, how fortunate a day! I am making bath water ready for anyone who desires the washing of their honorable selves before dinner. Honorable catfish will be so happy to be eaten by distinguished guests! Has been so wrong since we are entertaining trustable visitors!”

Then, having delivered himself of such sentiments, Yashiwara covered both eyes with his hands and ran inside, bawling. Simmons said, “Pay no attention. He’s a bit mad. Table’s set up out back and I’ve opened a jug of rum. Will you lot be staying aboard tonight, or would you rather bed down in the rooms upstairs?”

Sylvia Van Meer said, “Lord, I’d sell my soul for a night in a proper bed! Is it true you have bathing facilities as well?”

Simmons said, “Of course. I said we ran a posada as well as a trading post. We generally let the natives use those thatched huts you see all about, but we’ve proper rooms for ladies and gents.”

Gaston shot Captain Gringo a thoughtful glance. The American shrugged and said, “Sounds safer than sleeping aboard the launch. Never bunch up if you can avoid it, right?”

“Oui, I like the idea of being on a second floor in snake country, too.”

They followed Simmons around the veranda to where a trestle table was set up under hanging lanterns. As the trader struck a match, Captain Gringo said, “Leave them unlit, if you don’t mind. Nobody seems to be after you, but we’ve swapped lead with a downstream gang already.”

Simmons shrugged and shook out the match as he sat at the head of the table and picked up a clay olla of rum to pour. As the glass tumblers were passed to the others sitting down, Sylvia asked, “Are we supposed to drink rum neat?” and Simmons said, “Coo, the water’s bad for you in these parts. But I’ll get you a chaser.”

He clapped his hands, and when Yashiwara peeked around a corner, Simmons yelled, “Break open a tin of pineapple juice for the memsahib, chop chop! Anyone else want some fruit juice?”

Nobody did. Only Gaston was impolite enough to show by his expression what he thought of mixing rum and pineapple juice, both warm.
