Chapter Four

Norman Adversary

Dunster Castle, Somerset, England 1071

Sir Renaud de Clairvoy swung his heavy sword through the air and pressed it down menacingly against his opponent's chest plate.

"Admit thy defeat!" he growled ominously.

His opponent stared back at him grimly before a slow smile spread across his face. "Aye, brother!"

Renaud smiled and held his hand out to help him up. "Thee become stronger each day, Arthur. Thy leg wound seems to bother thee less."

"Aye, Renaud. When I awaken, I still feel a twinge but, once I am about, the pain lessens."

Recently injured in battle, Arthur was recuperating at Renaud's castle. He was the youngest of the three de Clairvoy brothers and had recently arrived from France to aid King William. Aged twenty-eight, two years younger than Renaud, he had always admired his older brother. They were both of similar stature, and Arthur wore his hair long like Renaud's, complemented by a neatly trimmed beard.

Handing their swords and armour to waiting squires, they walked back into the castle side by side.

"'Twould seem the Lady Cynwise has settled well into married life," Arthur noted. "How long hath it been?"

Renaud gave a wry smile. "Four months, brother."

"Methinks, from what I hath witnessed these past three weeks, she hath made thee a handsome wife. I wish I could find the same."

Renaud stopped and turned to stare at him. "What happened betwixt Helene and thee? I thought thee wouldst marry?"

"Aye, as did I. Despite my amorous attentions, she chose to wed another."

Renaud flung an arm around his shoulders. "I am truly sorry to hear this, Arthur. She was a fair damsel and wouldst hath made a fine wife for thee." Suddenly, an idea occurred to him. "Mayhap we shall hold a banquet and invite all the fair maidens from the vicinity. What say thee?"

Arthur grinned. "I say aye, brother."

Laughing together, they made their way into the keep.
