„I’ll be back as soon as I can,“ he promised a little roughly as he kissed her good-bye. „And then we must talk.“

„Yes, she agreed, hazel eyes shining in the morning light „We must“

„Alina! I just had a call from a free-lance scout who thinks he’s turned up a Wise forgery of a Tennyson book of

poems!“ Nick Elden hung up the phone behind the vast wooden desk which dominated the far end of Elden and Corey

Books.

Alina glanced up from a bibliography she was studying, grateful for the interruption. Her mind had been refusing

to focus on her work with its usual concentration. Memories of the previous night kept flitting through her head.

Memories of warmth and passion and… love?

She saw the pleased delight on Nick’s handsome face, his silvering head nodding to himself. „That’s great I’ve

been looking forward to seeing a real Thomas J. Wise forgery! Is this one of his better ones?“

„Not his masterpiece; most people still think his forgery of the reputed Reading edition of Sonnets by EBB.

supposedly published in 1847 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is the finest thing he did. But this Tennyson could be a

good one.“

„Incredible to think that Wise’s forgeries now often bring more than the originals!“ she marveled. „He was a master

of his craft, wasn’t he?“

„Definitely.“ Nick smiled, shuffling through some papers on his desk. „He was a fine bookman in his own right

Started out as a clerk in London and developed the fatal taste of book collecting. He concentrated on

nineteenth-century authors and became quite an authority on several. His bibliographies of Tennyson and Elizabeth

and Robert Browning are still standard works in the field. His scholarship was impeccable, and he did much to

popularize systematic bibliography. You have to admire the man. He had a facility for discovering rare editions.“

„And when they were not to be discovered, he manufactured them!“ Alina grinned. „He died in the thirties, didn’t

he?“

„Thirty-seven, I believe.“

„Where did the scout find the Tennyson forgery?“

„A private collection in Arizona. He wants us to handle it On a commission basis, of course. I think I have a couple

of possible buyers in mind….“ His fingers drummed momentarily on the huge desk as he considered the possibilities.

„Yes, I think I’ll start with Miller. He’s been after me for another forgery.“

Alina watched her partner reach for his phone again, and then she quietly went back to her work, wondering what

Jared was doing now. Had he reached Palm Springs yet? Was he thinking of her?

Her mouth twisted wryly. It was ridiculous. She was acting like a love-struck young girl instead of a reasonably

sophisticated woman of thirty who knew all about marriage and the falseness of men. What she hadn’t learned from

her own experiences, she’d learned from Battista. Hadn’t she?

The carefully annotated bibliography of the works of an eighteenth-century author blurred in front of her eyes as

she thought of the man who had so reluctantly left her bed this morning. He was different She knew it in the deepest

part of her being. No man could hold a woman as he’d held
