Chapter Thirteen

I’M GETTING married. The weight of the words crushed down on Nelson like a ton of bricks, constricting his lungs and leaving him trembling. It took every bit of his willpower to keep his feet moving and to hold back the tears that threatened. He knew something was going on and worried Luke would end their relationship. Hearing those three little words dashed any hope he’d had that Luke wouldn’t.

“Nelson! Wait up.”

Nelson kept walking even though he had no idea where he was or where he was going. He didn’t dare stop, didn’t dare turn around for fear the tentative hold he had on his emotions would be ripped away. He wasn’t going to cry, dammit. He wasn’t!

“C’mon, Nelson, wait.”

Luke’s voice grew closer, but Nelson didn’t stop, didn’t turn around. One foot in front of the other. He rounded the corner, and a hand landed on his shoulder. He shrugged it off.

“Dammit, Nelson. Just get in the car so we can talk about this.”

“There is nothing to talk about. You’re getting married,” Nelson spat.

“Oh, so because I’m getting married, we can no longer be friends?”

The statement was enough that the anger burned away the sadness, and he spun around. “Friends! Friends! Is that what you thought I was when I had my dick up your ass?” Nelson asked. He didn’t care who heard him.

“Yes, I did,” Luke countered. “I mean, was I hoping for more, that our relationship would grow into a lifelong commitment? You’re damn right I did. But fucking life happens, Nelson. I’m not going to apologize for trying to do the right thing for my child.”

“And that means being in a loveless marriage?” Nelson pushed out his chest and stepped close to Luke. He glared at him. “Way to teach your kid a lesson in settling for less than it all.”

Luke didn’t back down, towering over Nelson and returning the angry gaze. “It’s a better lesson than teaching them that it’s okay to run from their responsibilities. That it’s okay to be a weekend parent!”

“Why do you have to be a weekend parent? You could fight for custody!” Nelson’s voice rose with each word until he was screaming.

“You know damn good and well dads don’t have any rights when it comes to raising a child on their own. If the mom is alive, the judge sides with them every time.”

“Because you’ve tried, right?” Goddammit, this was not how he wanted to spend his limited time with Luke. Screaming and bickering in public. But he couldn’t help it. He had either to lash out or cry. Anger seemed a whole lot easier to deal with at the moment.

“For what, Nelson? Fight to take my child away from his or her mother and choose someone who is too fucking afraid to tell anyone he’s gay? Is that what you want me to do? Is that my choice?” Luke roared. “A loveless marriage or a closeted coward?”

Nelson narrowed his eyes, his breathing as fast as his racing heart. He curled his hands into fists to keep from punching Luke in his damn jaw.
