Fagua was conked out in the hotel bed and I stepped out onto the balcony, allowing the moonlight to wash over me. I couldn't believe that we had mated. And running with her in our wolf forms felt so right. Hadn't even known a half-breed like her could shift. But then again, maybe I'd had more wrong than I'd once believed. Fagua was making me see things in a new light.

Maybe I could open up a little more to her. Trust in the fates, or whatever Sky called them.

I chuckled, shaking my head, and leaned my elbows on the railing. Vegas stretched out with twinkling lights and a warm late summer breeze. They said New York was the city that never sleeps, but whoever had coined that saying had never been here.

Gamblers, drunks, and party goers would be carrying on until dawn. I glanced back at Fagua, who hadn't stirred since I laid her on the bed. I wanted her again, but she was sleeping like she was in a coma. The best I could do was wait, even if I was being impatient. I had to leave her alone so I wouldn’t wake her.

There was movement near the edge of the hotel parking lot that caught my gaze. Three dark figures blurred closer, and a growl rumbled low in my throat.

Vamps.

What the fuck were they doing here?

Their smirks had me leaping over the balcony and landing in front of them. Had Fagua's father stooped so low as to hire vampires to come after her now?

"What do you want?" I asked, my hands curled into fists.

"You're the eldest brother?" One of them stepped closer. His pale face gleamed in the moonlight. "Alister wishes to speak with you."

"About what?" I held back my wolf, who wanted to pounce and tear into them.

"A deal your brother Sky made that hasn't been fulfilled."

Fuck! Damn my brother and his knack for always getting into shit. I stared at them, then at the limo, then back to them. It seemed I had no choice but to go along with them to see what Alister wanted. "Where is this Alister, then?"

The vampire bowed and held his arm out to the black limo that idled at the back of the parking lot.

"He awaits you," the vampire said, and his two cohorts stepped aside.

I walked to the limo, climbed in, and slid onto the black leather seat with a sigh.

Seated across from me was a vampire with dark eyes that looked ancient. Like he'd seen a hundred years of hatred and war. His face was wrinkled and pale like a doll that had been out in the sun too long.

When he looked at me, I could feel cold fingers reach through my body and grasp my soul. His expression was bland, but his presence was sinister. He smelled of incense and decay—a foul odor that made me think of a dozen bodies rotting at once.

Alister leaned forward from the rear seat. Something about the vampire made my wolf uneasy, like it sensed danger.
