It wasn’t lost on Paige that all eyes were on her and Nina as Nina pulled her up the short embankment next to the pickup area, toward the line of trees that separated the school from the playing fields. She could see the other women judging her, and even heard a few of their whispers as they went.

That’s her? The woman John—

Nina Anand is so weird. Of course they’re friends.

Yeah, she could totally murder someone.

What is with the acid-wash?

Okay, these jeans were the height of fashion back in L.A. It wasn’t Paige’s fault that this ass-backward town still thought Burberry was cool. And honestly, if they really believed Ainsley had been murdered, they should have been focusing on Lanie, who wanted to pretend that Ainsley hadn’t been about to steal back the presidency. Or freaking Nina, whom Ainsley had accused of a felony mere hours before she died.

What was she even doing here? When Paige woke up this morning and saw the sun shining, felt the crisp fall air through the window screens, she’d been sure it was going to be a productive day. She’d been looking forward to getting some writing done and then coming to school to chat people up and see what she could learn about Ainsley and her potential enemies. But then she’d gone and fallen down the L.A. tabloid rabbit hole and ended up wasting the entire six hours Izzy was in school feeling sorry for herself. She should just go back to L.A. Beg her agent to find her something—anything. Paige hated feeling like her career was leaving her behind. And then she’d gone and missed her chance to get new info out of Lanie, all because she was whining about YouTube.

“You can let go of me now.” Paige wrenched her arm from Nina’s iron-like grip. “For a person who doesn’t like being touched, you sure have no problem manhandling other people.”

“Sorry. I don’t have much time.” Nina straightened her black jacket, which she wore over—shocker—a white shirt and black pants. “I have to get the kids to their enrichment programs and then get back to the office for a meeting at four, but I wasn’t sure when I’d see you, and I need you to be my campaign manager.”

“I’m sorry, what?”

“I need you to be my campaign manager,” Nina repeated impatiently. She almost rolled her eyes, Paige could tell, but stopped herself. “And if you’re going to be my campaign manager, you can’t be seen talking to Lanie Chen-Katapodis.”

Paige snorted a laugh. Should she tell Nina exactly what it was that she and Lanie had been talking about? No. She didn’t want to give Nina the satisfaction of knowing that Lanie was unnerved by her.

“Okay, first of all, I’ll talk to whomever I want to talk to. Secondly, you’re running for president of a school parent organization. Isn’t having a campaign manager sort of overkill?”

Nina took in a breath to reply, but Paige held up a finger to stop her.

“And thirdly, you don’t want me as your campaign manager.
