Chapter Nine

Tuesday

“Your stove is fine, just needed some adjusting and a new thermostat. You shouldn’t have any more problems.”

Lindsey turned from stacking boxes of paper towels in the tiny cupboard in the center’s kitchen. The repairman in navy coveralls had shown up first thing that morning, saying he was there to fix the stove. Now he was closing his toolbox and speaking for the first time in two hours.

“Thanks for coming so quickly,” she said.

He glanced at her, then gripped his toolbox as he readied to leave. “They put a rush on it. Otherwise, you would’ve been lucky to get it done at all. Staff’s so short.” He went to the door, then stopped and frowned at her. “You heard about John Olson, didn’t you?”

She remembered John Olson’s name very well. “Yes, I heard about him.”

“Get this. He was fired, and he’d been here for years. But he got his revenge.”

“Revenge?”

“Listen to this, the High and Mighty upstairs fire John, then a week later one of them gets stuck in the elevator. Not only does he get stuck, but it’s with some woman. Probably trying to impress her—and the elevator gets stuck between floors. John’s gone. Andy, the fill-in guy, who doesn’t know beans about the lifts, can’t figure it out. The guy and the woman end up having to crawl out the hole in the top and up the shaft.” He laughed at that. “Damn, wouldn’t ya have liked to have been there to see that? The guy explaining to his date why they had to shimmy up cables.”

She smiled at the memory. “It must have been something.”

“Know what the best part was?”

She had her own view of that, but she let him talk. “No.”

“John comes in, flips a switch and bingo, bango, done! And they pay John a ton of bucks to do it.” He laughed again. “Served them right, I’d say.”

She knew her smile deepened. “I’d say so, too.”

“Damn right.” He motioned to the stove. “I hope that works for a while.”

“They said we could get a new one if it doesn’t.”

“I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. They’d sooner nail this place shut than put money in it.” He shrugged. “Probably will, anyway. They’re cutting everything. Just ask John Olson, eh?” He touched his beaked cap with one hand. “See you later,” he said, then left.

Lindsey took off the apron she’d been wearing over beige slacks and a teal shirt, and headed for her office. The man’s last words had taken away any of the humor she’d felt. There was no way they could just shut down the center. Cutting was one thing, but closing it…She tiptoed through the main room, past the kids napping on their mats and Amy sitting in the rocking chair with Taylor in her lap, her eyes closed, too.

She went through into her office, closed the door and leaned back against it. No, Zane wouldn’t be closing the center if he fixed the stove. That didn’t make any sense. But then, he was responsible for John Olson losing his job.
