Some rather miscellaneous things happened the rest of November that amused me a little and made me a little sad.
We went to a dinner one night and I sat at the “I don’t know” and “What did you say?” end of the table. Many of our friends can’t hear well or are slowly fading in and out. In answer to the simplest question like, “Where is your brother living now?” the answer is, “I don’t know,” or, “What did you say?” That’s sad.
George told me that one of the major networks asked him to tape a message about both Jerry Ford and Ronald Reagan so that when they died, the network would have it “in the can” and be ready to go. I knew that newspapers did this kind of thing. They have obits already written so they can get them out immediately. Well, George turned them down flat. After all, they were still with us! He then learned that Dan Quayle had gotten a letter requesting that he make a statement about George! Now I think that is sad and amusing in a sick kind of way. (I just learned in 2002 that Jean Becker, when she worked at USA Today, was asked to write my obituary before she left there in 1989 to come work for me at the White House! Thank heavens they haven’t had to use it yet.)
And at the end of November I wrote in my diary:
My heart is broken this morning. 70 people, mostly tourists, were killed in Luxor, Egypt [by] extremists. Poor people. Poor Egypt. This will devastate tourism in Egypt and an already poor economy. Suzanne Mubarak must be sick. I hate it when a friend hurts.
