Chapter Sixteen

I am more than ready to leave. When I get up, the room spins for a second, something I become fully aware of when Robyn steadies me.

“Head rush,” I say quickly. “I’m fine.”

She nods but stays close which is more reassuring than I care to admit.

This is it. This is the end of life as I knew it, when I thought there were still people in my family I could count on—because Claudia and Elena won’t feel much like joining forces once they hear that Luca was arrested. Sofia is technically not my family.

Is this what Dad tried to avoid? Or what he had in mind? I guess I’ll never know.

I feel lost.

“Please tell me that I can go home and have a drink soon. I need it.”

She gives me an apologetic look. Before she can answer, Hampton McKay joins us. He overheard my question.

“I’m afraid we’ll have to spend some time at the office, but we’ll do the major part of it starting tomorrow. I expect Mr. Mancini will want to sort out details with his lawyer too. I assume it won’t be Ms. Winter?”

“No. He has his own.”

“Okay, this is what we’re going to do,” Robyn decides. “We’ll go to the field office, see what we need to go over right now. I agree, it won’t be long.”

“I suppose you’ll stay with Ms. Mancini?”

For a heartbeat or so, both of us simply stare at him until we realize he’s talking about the order Carr gave earlier. It’s not a revelation. They still don’t know who came to deliver the picture.

Of course, Robyn will stay.

“Yes. We can’t be too careful,” she says.

To my relief, Robyn and Hampton haven’t promised too much. After a quick debriefing, Robyn and I can go back to the hotel while Luca is sorting out his situation with the help of his lawyers. I have told them everything I know from the beginning—regarding Luca and his deals anyway. That last deal is not going to happen now, and no one died. It’s a win.

As soon as we are in the suite, I go straight to the bathroom and start running a bath. I order a bottle of champagne and some food from room service.

Robyn watches me carefully but doesn’t comment.

“What?” I say anyway. “Now there’s nothing we can do but wait, right?”

“I’m aware,” she answers, sounding as tired as I am. “I’ll wait for room service if you want to go in.”

“Thank you.”

So far, most of my clever plans have become unraveled. Ironically, when I’ve been working with Robyn, things seem to work out better. For the other side anyway—or maybe sides have changed—hell if I know. In any case, I’m glad Luca’s out. And with him, the people who came to the meeting tonight.

I am about to undress when my phone vibrates on the dresser.

That was to be expected.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Claudia yells at me. “We lose our father, now you throw Luca to the wolves?”

“I didn’t do anything.
