I’ve only got time for a quick note, old chap—meeting with the director in a half hour and bracing myself for a thorough thrashing. Things aren’t going well with the “Red Mistress Disaster,” as I’ve come to think of it, and my head will be the first to roll if it all goes to hell. You’ve done this job long enough to know what I’m up against. The woman was known to be an expert with disguises, as well as utterly ruthless. (You saw the photos of that murder scene in Paris—I wouldn’t have wanted to cross her.) She left no compromising evidence in her hotel room and no clues as to why she was here. I’ve questioned hundreds of café owners, hotel guests, and taxi drivers, without finding a single person who saw her.

The director’s got the Home Office and the Foreign Office on him about the “Soviet menace” and spies invading our shores, and I can’t blame him getting snippy, but there’s only so much we can do. We all suspect, with good reason, that she was run down by her own side, but proving it is another matter. Privately, I say good riddance. One less Bolshie in the world.

Hope to see you at the club soon—I’ve been so busy, I haven’t been there in weeks.
