THE RED TENT

Give up all the other worlds

except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet

confinement of your aloneness

to learn

anything or anyone

that does not bring you alive

is too small for you.

DAVID WHYTE

Soon after that Smooch in the dark, my Red Lady did the strangest thing — She swept through my front door on a warm gust of glitter and Red feathers, carrying rather large Red suitcases. My jaw dropped. Apparently, She was Moving In. It was time for a closer living arrangement. Specifically, it was time to create a Red Tent, physically and energetically, so that a necessary gestation and eventual “Virgin” birth of us could happen.

The Red Tent was first described in Anita Diamant’s bestselling novel The Red Tent as a place where women in ancient times gathered when they were menstruating or giving birth. This idea of creating a sacred space for women to honor their body’s changes together spread like wildfire. Now hundreds of Red Tents are erected at various women’s events and private homes all around the country … even in tiny apartments in San Francisco.
