* The drum is a musical instrument that is present throughout all cultures in Africa and the African diaspora. During slavery in the United States, the drum was prohibited because it was believed that enslaved Africans used it to send messages. However, they used their bodies and other instruments to make music during celebrations, one of which was the ring shout, a circle dance where music is made by stomping and shuffling the feet and clapping to a call-and-response. A roll call is when someone calls out names for attendance. A cypher in hip-hop is a gathering of rappers and break-dancers who share their skills with a crowd of onlookers.
