Chapter Fifteen
Danielle woke up the next afternoon and instantly chastised herself for sleeping so late. She threw on an oversized T-shirt and some athletic shorts, brushed her teeth and hair, and padded into the living room to find Talitha buzzing about the kitchen. She was softly singing a song that Danielle recognized but couldnât quite place.
âHey, what are you doing?â
Talitha jumped. âOh goodness. You scared me.â Her fair cheeks instantly turned bright red. âI was thinking I would bake some cookies. Iâm good at baking.â
Danielle stretched, trying to get her body to wake up. âReally? Thatâs cool. Whereâs Brett?â
âHeâs in the garage fiddling with his boat. He said this weekend heâd take us to the lake. Doesnât that sound like fun?â Talithaâs excitement shone through, and it made her glow. Danielle couldnât believe what a difference just a couple of days had made.
âWell, you get back to your baking. Iâm going to go chat with the man of the house.â
âOkay,â she said joyously.
As Danielle started for the garage, Talitha started singing again, and this time Danielle instantly recognized the song. It was âBlessed Poison,â only she wasnât singing it right. It was too slow. She had only played it that way once.
âWhere did you hear that?â
Talitha jumped again. âWhat?â
âThat song. Where did you hear that song?â
Talithaâs face went slack, and it dawned on Danielle that she probably thought sheâd made some sort of terrible error. But Danielle was focused on other things. âUm, Brett played it for me last night. Itâs one of yours, isnât it?â
âYeah, itâs one of mine,â she hissed. âHow did he play it for you? On his computer?â
âUm...YouTube?â
âI knew it.â She stormed towards the garage and flung the door open. Brett was couched in the boat, the engine cover off. He had a smear of grease across his forehead. âYou asshole.â
Brett let the crescent wrench he was holding go, and it clambered to the deck of the boat. âWhat? What are you talking about?â
âYou posted that, didnât you? I expressly told you not to. You told me you deleted it. You lying sack of shit.â
âI didnât lie.â He struggled to his feet.
âSave your bullshit,â Danielle snapped. âI canât believe I trusted you. I must be losing my mind.â She stormed out of the garage with Brett desperately scrambling out of the boat to catch up.
âWait, Danielle. Just listen to me.â He finally caught up to her in the living room and spun her around by her arm. Behind them, Talitha stood shocked in the kitchen, cradling a mixing bowl in the crook of her arm. âWould you just wait a minute?â
âWhy, so you can spin some crock of shit? Why would I believe anything you say to me now?â
Brett sighed and wiped at his sweaty brow. âWhy donât you just shut up for half a second and let me tell you what happened? I think you owe me that much.â
âI donât owe you anything,â she said, knowing that was a lie.
âCome. Sit.â Brett took Danielle by the elbow and gently led her to the couch.
