Chapter Eighteen
Blue Hawk was asleep in the back of the wagon by the time we got home from the picnic. Shadow carried our son to bed and I tucked him in, and then I followed Shadow outside and into the barn. I sat on a bale of straw while he led the first horse into its stall. My curiosity was killing me and I couldn’t keep silent any longer.
“All right, what did you say to Joey?”
He glanced at me over his shoulder. “What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean. She looked scared to death.”
Shadow chuckled as he closed the stall door and opened the one next to it.
Sometimes he could be the most aggravating man! “Tell me,” I insisted.
He closed and latched the door. “I asked her how she felt about Blackie.”
“You didn’t!” I stared at him in horror. “Oh, I don’t believe it. You did! How could you? What did she say?”
“She is as fond of him as he is of her.” He grabbed the pitchfork and forked hay for both horses.
“A blind man could see that,” I muttered.
“I think we will have another daughter soon.”
“Do you think they’ll be happy together? As happy as we are?”
“No one is as happy as we are.” He put the pitchfork away and then pulled me into his arms, his chin resting on top of my head.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“Nothing.”
“Something’s bothering you,” I insisted. I’d been married to him long enough to recognize the signs.
“I sense trouble coming.”
“What kind of trouble?”
His hands lightly massaged my back, soothing and arousing at the same time. “I do not know.”
He brushed his lips across the top of my head, then slid his arm around my waist and we left the barn. Shadow closed the barn door and we walked up to the house, pausing at the foot of the porch stairs.
It was a beautiful night. I wondered where Blackie was, if he was still with Joey. I had seen the way they looked at each other while they danced and I knew Shadow was right. There would be another wedding in the family soon…
“What about Joey’s family?” I said, frowning. “I’m sure they won’t give Joey their blessing. And that brother of hers…”
My voice trailed off as Shadow drew me close and began raining feathery kisses over my face and neck.
“And what about…?” I shivered with delight as his hands moved over me. After all these years, he could still excite me, still make me tremble like a young girl in love for the first time.
“What about what?” he asked. He knew exactly how his touch affected me. I heard the sly amusement in his voice, the faintly smug note of masculine satisfaction.
I faked a huge yawn and pushed him away. “We’ll have to talk about it later,” I said, one foot on the bottom step. “I’m too tired to talk about it tonight.”
“Too tired?” He came up behind me, his body pressing close to mine so that I could feel his arousal.
“Yes, sorry.”
His hands folded over my shoulders, holding me in place.
