By 2 a.m. it had subsided, but I was up for the rest of the night as usual. Studied Italian for two hours, wrote letters to Minda Rae, Mother, + Rosie—+ a card to James Griffin—(I took his pen by mistake on Sunday). Re-read the Muirhead Guide to London + planned the places I’d take David. A lot of nervous energy expended in reading. At 6 a.m. began this entry, + will try to sleep now.

[During the last week of September and the first week of October 1957, SS and Jane Degras went for a holiday in Italy. SS kept copious notes, but most simply record what she saw, what the trains were like, where the two women stayed, and what they ate. The only entry I have included is SS’s description of Florence, which she was seeing for the first time.]
